Sometimes I’m just overwhelmed by the kindness …

The response to our ‘Comfort Shawls for Newtown’ post has been stunning, to say the least, and we thank you so very much.   Chicago picked it up:   http://www.examiner.com/article/free-knitting-patterns-for-items-to-donate-to-victims-families-newtown

We packed up a box of 55 shawls/scarves today and they are on their way to Newtown.  We will continue with our ‘Age of Brass and Steam’ knitting for the teachers and staff of Sandy Hook.  Please join us if you can … we have yarn donated by Cascade Yarn if you are local & can pick up.

Keep knitting, I’ll noodle this out.

It was just a simple little post …

‘Casting on a prayer shawl to send to Newtown … I can’t knit 20+ quickly enough. Would anyone like to join me? I’ll work out the logistics and get them shipped. RSVP here, please.’  And then our shop FB page exploded with responses …

All day I have thought about picking my very, very dear granddaughter up at school (while bitching to myself in the car about those chain link fences and locked gates around her school campus … is this really necessary?) Apparently and sadly so.

I have cried off and on all day at this senseless shooting of young children … truly, nothing can comfort these families …

But we can craft them something and show them that we care …  just work something up and get it to us, we’ll send it on ~  and we thank you.

So, if you’d like to join us send a cohesive package of love to these fractured families, here’s the address:

Ewe & Company
407 North Main Street

Wax on, wax off …

Today I learned that Schaefer Yarn Company is closing at the end of this year.  I love Schafer Yarn, and here is pretty much why.

The first trip Sam and I made to San Francisco, he was in IRS tax seminars all day and I was left to spalunck around SF.  And I was scared, I’d never been dropped in a major city on my own.  We were staying at a hotel around Union Square, so I allowed myself a one-block radius (because I can get lost in a paper bag and know not to press my luck).  I remember asking the concerige where the yarn shops and art supply stores were …. and got, well, you know, the look.  Personally, I didn’t care for his attitude.

So I took my brave and sassy invincible (invisible?) self for a walk around the square.  Three quarters around I saw a very small and unobtrusive sign that said ‘Yarn Garden” in an upstairs window over a market.  Okay, it was 12 feet off my intended walk, but it was yarn.  Walking into the market, (being the Tennessee bumpkin) I was totally confused … there were groceries, wine & whiskey … but no yarn.  They directed me to the freight elevator in the back, or the well worn, dark but well traveled steps up to the second floor.  Being in earthquake country, I decided the steps might be marginally safer.  But I was … timid.

And walked into a space of joy … chairs just to sit and knit, windows with the Pacific light pouring in, and two guys who just loved fiber.  They sold me on a Dale of Norway book and a bag full of Rowan button yarns ($$$) for making the full sweater project.  Then I spied long hanks of yarn hanging over in the corner like nothing I’d ever seen … the jewel tones that I just had to have.   I’d already committed to the Rowan … but …

So, I bought 4 hanks of Schaefer.  And just put it away … for something special, for this special yarn.

Knitted up a ‘Peace Shawl’ which went to my friend Ginger when her husband of 50+ years passed.  Knitted up another for Nicky Epstein workshop I was able to attend this spring through Vogue Knitting.

Have one more left … it has just become all that more precious.

Still keeping some back in the stash.

If you can’t beat them, join them …

So if you’ve been following my personal Facebook posts, you know that Bacchus is my runabout dog.  He was boarded last week while I took a trip to Savannah to be Nana for a week.  So my thinking is that maybe I need to keep him closer (he is definitely a people dog), and could run my shop with him around so as not to worry about his safety.  Thought when I picked him up that I’d give him a try in the shop … and he was great!  (OK, mostly …. and then he jumped out the car window on the way home, but that’s a whole other post!).   Hope you’ll stop by and meet him in the shop soon!

Folkloric Tunic update …

Just a quick update, over half way through this lovely (and really pretty easy) knit! One recommendation if you are working on this one … pick up and knit your wrap & turns, it makes for a much smoother fabric!  My advice is to get your VK Fall 2012 mag, visit your LYS to pick up the yarn and just try this one; it is a much, much easier knit than it appears … and it is looking simply stunning!

Half the way there!

Have you seen this lovely design?

This is the ‘Folkloric Tunic’ in the Vogue Knitting Fall 2012 magazine … and is nothing I ever thought I’d be knitting.  But I’ve got to tell you, this is a lovely and interesting knit, however I would not have started this one without Kim raving and almost drooling over this sweater and then nudge, nudge, nudging me into knitting it … (OK, lots of times I need that!)

It may look intimidating, but is really quite simple ~ just a few short rows and yarn changes, slips and knits.  And it is working up amazingly fast and gorgeous.  Cast on was Thursday night, and here’s a photo of the back with about half the bottom band done … will post more as time and progress permits.

There is a great project page on Ravelry that also comments piece by piece … here’s the link:  http://www.ravelry.com/projects/manhattanmarg/09-folkloric-tunic, she’s way ahead of me!
And if you’d like a KAL on this project just let us know, we have lots of yarn options I’m thinking would work for this jewel of a knit!
